Carbonisation is about transformation and transcendence from one form to another, adding and extracting energy throughout the process. There are dramatic changes in the state of energy in the production and use of the source material Elle uses. So the energy is not necessarily spent, but has been used to create the subsequent form or state of the raw material.

The carbonised object becomes a sculpture, and the powdery residue from the carbonisation process becomes the source for Elle’s material for paintings.

The material emerges from the ashes to be renewed after destruction.
